WOODPECKERS – 1
BWVA – 0

“Birds do it… Bees do it…”.  Cole Porter had it right… at least as far as birds are concerned. Woodpeckers, hairy, red headed and bellied, downy, the whole lot of them, are “doing it“ to the stucco of the mid-rise buildings and have been for years. They chip away and peck sizable holes into the roof top trim in their endless quest for bugs and other treats.  Apparently, the bountiful trees beautifying our campus just aren’t good enough.

Years ago, plastic roof top owls were mounted with laughable results.  Earlier this year, on the advice of experts, three different devices –  iridescent and multi-colored streamers along with  “terror masks” –  were installed, one on each mid-rise parapet.  They were colorful and curious additions to the property for those at ground level who were sharp-eyed enough to see them. The hope was that BWVA would be rid of the creatures and the annual $10k plus repair bill they generate.  The experiment was commenced.  Battle was engaged! Hopes were high!

To no avail!  Another scheme ignored by the enemy who blissfully pecked away.  It didn’t help that the streamers clung to the building rather than flying high and the masks (which turned out to be balloons with hideous faces) blew away after a day or two.  I’m sure the birds were amused and eagerly await the next attempt.

I have no idea what that might be.  Suggestions are welcome.  While this battle was clearly lost, I remain Churchillian in my resolve to “never give in” and to fight at least next-door to the ocean and beach, adding from the roof tops, whatever it takes.  Stay tuned.
