Dear Owners
As you will recall, I sent out two types of signs (bath and disposer/kitchen) as suggestions for rental units to help prevent drainage issues. I hope all rental units have taken advantage of that and installed them. I have, uncovered two more suggestions.
- This one, I cannot verify, but it comes from a pretty, reliable source, I think. When in residence, buy some BLUE Dawn dishwashing liquid. Run plenty of HOT water down the kitchen drain. Then pour a little Dawn around the edge of the drain and run some hot water over it to get it into the sewer line and the kitchen u-joint. Apparently, this particular liquid has some special grease fighting power. I have started using it, but, since I can’t see in the drainpipe, I am not sure how much good it does. No clogs so far, but that may not mean much. Maybe I wouldn’t have had any anyway. I have had my share of sink clogs over the years though.
- My second tip is something I have been testing and using for about a year and I do suggest using it. See the link and description below. When you go to the link, there are many versions and options. This Zip-it tool is the one I have been using. It says it is disposable and a one-use item but I wash it off and reuse it in the kitchen sink, every bath sink and tub/shower drain every time I am in residence. It is about 19 inches long so it will not clean out your sewer line but you will be amazed and what it does pull out to clear out the drain plug and u-joint areas. I have had no clogs in those areas in the last year or so and the drains run much more freely, but I can guarantee a lot less hair, etc. is stuck in my drains. This link is for Amazon, but I think I got mine from Turner Ace Hardware on the island or at the Publix. I would recommend you get one to start with and decide for yourself if you want to treat them as a one-use item or clean it and reuse it.
